We support efforts by the UC Green New Deal Coaliton to decarbonize, dissociate, and educate within the UC, and build coalitions for a #FossilFreeUC.
The University of California, as California’s biggest employer and a tax-supported institution, is more than a university. It is a public institution obligated to act in the public interest, our collective environmental interest.
As alumni, we are in a unique position of power. Alumni are like products a university have already sold. If they speak well of their school, the school looks good! Alumni are also resources for a university. Their current students can look to Alumni as role models and contacts as they consider their futures. Alumni are also sources of income for a university. In the 2021-2022 school year, alumni alone donated about $534 million to the UC system.
Plus, engaging alum is important because it preserves continuity. Alumni pass down institutional knowledge and serve as reminders to the UC that people don’t stop watching just because they have graduated. There is also strength in numbers, and there is an infinite amount of UC alumni as more people graduate every year. This is also a new way to put pressure on UC to make the right climate decisions.
For alumni, it is critical to remain engaged in determining the path of the University of California system. We make giant investments of time, energy, and money into our university education, and once we leave, our names are forever associated with our school and vice versa.
